A New Way to Work, Create and Study
Moleskine unveils the smart writing set.
Unveiling a new way to work, create and study, Moleskine launches a specially designed notebook, pen, and app that work in tandem to instantly digitize notes and sketches made on paper, creating digital text and images that can be edited and shared immediately with a phone, tablet, or laptop.
The new Smart Writing Set is a system made up of three elements that make it possible to edit and share what you create on paper in real-time without taking a photo, uploading files, or scanning documents:
- The Paper Tablet, which feels like a notebook but is purposely designed with extended rounded edges to look like a tablet.
- The Pen+, a slim, aluminum pen with a hidden camera that traces and digitizes everything you write.
- The Moleskine Notes App, where written notes and sketches are stored and can be shared, exported, edited, and searched.
The new set of tools builds on the legacy of Moleskine, which was born as a celebration of the small black notebooks used by thinkers, artists, and writers of the past who wanted to create freely in the streets, at cafés or when travelling far a-field. The Smart Writing Set was developed for today’s digitally connected creative professionals, knowledge workers and students who want to take advantage of the creative and learning power of developing ideas on paper first.
“We see demand for our paper-based collections grow in double digits year after year, showing the continued relevance of paper in the digital age”, says Arrigo Berni, CEO of Moleskine. “On the other end we are well aware of all the advantages of digital, for editing, curating and sharing. This is why we see analog and digital as a continuum.”
The inner pages of the Paper Tablet, designed by Giulio Iacchetti, project beyond the cover giving it the distinctive rounded edge typical of digital tablets. Both a playful ploy and an invitation to project ideas beyond the boundaries of paper, the Paper Tablet features thick paper ideal for both writing and drawing. The paper is made with NcodeÔ technology patented by NeoLAB Convergence, a grid invisible to the naked eye is hidden in the paper and enables the pen, powered by Neo smartpen, to recognize where it is on the page and within the notebook.
Digital notes and sketches created on the Paper Tablet are stored in the free Moleskine Notes App for iPhone users and Neo Notes for Android users Written notes can be stored in handwriting or transcribed into digital text so they can be exported, edited or searched. Notes can be shared in various file formats to other applications and devices including Google Drive and Evernote .
With the Smart Writing Set you can create offline first, using your hand to eye coordination and reducing digital distraction. Thoughts can be drawn on paper and refined in the app. Notes can be handwritten in a meeting and sent as a PDF attachment to your team back at the office with a tap of the pen. Sketches can be shared in real time or turned into a just-in-time presentation.
“The tools and services we provide in our Moleskine+ collection are designed to help people bridge the divide between analog and digital,” says Peter Jensen, Head of Digital Innovation at Moleskine. “The Smart Writing Set represents a major step forward by creating an easy-to-use system that enables you to capture ideas as they happen and continue to work on them as they develop.”
