Hooray for Millennials After Balenciaga, the Sky is the Limit!!!
Demma Gvasalia, who had so far led the anti-fashion retail outlet Vetements, comes into a fashion brand so far regarded as the epitome of snobbish style.
Wrapped in nuptials transparencies; disco music lots of gossip and the vibrant colors of spring came the news that the honorable house of Cristobal Balenciaga had decided to follow is founders’ steps and jump onto the waters of the brave 21stcentury by appointing a 34 year old Georgian as its artistic director. Demma Gvasalia who had so far led the anti-fashion retail outlet Vetements comes into a fashion brand so far regarded as the epitome of snobbish style but also of good taste and revolutionary couture.
Like Mr. Balenciaga, his young successor takes inspiration in the arts. Having been trained at the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp, Gvasalia owns the technique for art creation. Unlike the “King” as Women’s Wear Daily dubbed Mr. Balenciaga his successor sees fashion design as an entertainment proposal rather than a wrap to envelope the feminine body. And while Mr. Balenciaga surrounded himself with the top of the creative talent such a Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro, Mr. Gvasalia is part of that talent as in this century of information explosion art and entertainment are the bait to capture people’s attention.
As an artist Mr. Gvasalia has created clothes that do not cover bodies but give bodies the attribute of telling us the history, moods and feelings of the wearer. Because they are part of an artistic creation that aims at placing the individual at the center of all human endeavors just like the Renaissance geniuses.
And while he will have a tough job continuing production at Vetements and creating the new Balenciaga look and feel, his efforts will probably interact to bring to the king’s brand a dash of contemporary life while preserving its stylish and sleek designs while injecting into Vetements that sense of savoir faire that only Cristobal Balenciaga managed to imbed into cloths.
And this is what Mr. Gvasalia is all about: one of the leaders of a generation that constantly crosses traditions; techniques and ways of life to bring to humanity a set of behavioral principles that take every man and woman closer to spirituality. These are the millennials!!!
