How can I combat halitosis?

Halitosis or bad breath happens more commonly than we think.

Perhaps, it may surprise you to know than one in two people suffer from it and despite the reasons of having this disgusting smells vary depending on each person, some of them are very frequent and we should count on them when looking after our oral health. Of course, this difficulty goes with oral hygiene, very uncared-for in most of the cases. There are two types of halitosis, oral and extra-oral, being more common the first one (up to the 90% of the cases).

Most of the times, bad breath is produced due to bad habits, not healthy, that affect our mouth, such us dental caries, tobacco, alcohol or the intake of food with strong smell like onion, garlic, dairy products or tuna, for example. Of course, we should clarify that we don’t have to stop eating this kind of food but we do have to count on some routines to combat them as good as possible.

Oral health isn’t foreign to the rest of our body, and despite of other factors that could affect in our bad breath apart from caries or gum issues, liver, lungs or stomach problems (up to the 50% of the cases), it is the accumulation of bacterial plaque the most common, so that, it is essential to take care of our oral health in a daily basis.

A good brushing after eating will always help to improve this situation, moreover, we can also reduce halitosis drinking a lot of water everyday because, apart from being very beneficial for the whole immunologic system, it will help us to produce more saliva. On the other hand, the intake of carbohydrates, reducing the intake of proteins, same as chewing leaves or products with peppermint, are some of the things we can do daily to avoid halitosis.
