The Hostel of the Small Houses

When you hear to talk about the small houses you may be tempted to think about homes of tiny proportions, either for the use of companion animals or for the enjoyment of our children with their toys… Now, in a shelter in China, an architect named Cao Pu, been committed to that we change of conceptualization, which, of course, we thanks, above all by the freshness of the idea… (although, personally, I hope not extend).

This hostel of high design, located near the Beijing South railway station, has as main mission that the customers opt a new way to connect socially, taking advantage of the space generated by a large surface area for the suppression of «barriers» traditional of the any room, in other words, eliminating partitions. Yes, there is no reason so that we may be caught in standard rooms, at least for a few days, give us the opportunity to live to the big… in small houses of wood and polycarbonate!

Inspired by the cheerful camaraderie of music festivals, this «Together Hostel» in Beijing (capital of China), offers spaces like tents formed by structures of wood and polycarbonate in different sizes, able to be stacked of different forms, be transferred by the wide surface of the building, according that the guests need to stay alone or accompanied.

The simple design, consisting of rectangular cubicles with gabled roof, allows hosting (never better said) only a bed, lights and electrical outlets. The top panels can be moved to get more light or ventilation.  The life is out of these coffered ceilings of wood, on the premises of the complex, where you coexist (to the force) with other guests.

If you suffer from claustrophobia or crave intimacy it is clear that do not should consider stay here, but if you want new sensations or share your stay in China of shape unusual, this is your place. A huge internal surface, with one minimalist design (again) of a traditional dwelling, takes the public space where to eat, drink, read, play and chat and share activities with friends and strangers.

They have a zone of offices, a café-bar, a kitchen and, of course, restrooms and showers, all this in common use, so… let’s share! Between the simple and the double rooms there are some bleachers designed as part of the furniture, for general enjoyment, serving (in addition) to store bicycles. The hostel has capacity for 120 people, is ideal for young people (or people with communicative spirit), in fact, if you are under 16 years of age or greater than 50, you will not be able to reside there.

For 12 euros per day they offer free bedding, transfer to the airport, city maps, and Wi-Fi to be connected to the network (and be able to send your selfies). You can deposit your luggage in safe areas, although you cannot smoking inside the hostel, take your pet with you or raise his voice during the hours of rest.

As almost everything, those which have proven the experience have a variety of opinions. From Finland, for example, praised the curtains or your staff friendly and helpful, from Canada, someone told that it is clean, but from Iran and Israel warn us that the staff is not well trained and do not know another language that the Chinese , which, obviously, is a handicap for a trade that aims to internationality.

Open this year (2.017), its 800 square meters distributed in two floors, the second, where are located the small houses, and the third floor, where the mini-hostal also offers «traditional» rooms with individual bathrooms, for those who cannot stand the social conditions of the lower floor… the success is in the diversity! By the way, there are no clear dimensions… could Pau Gasol rent the «cubicle» for some days?

The polycarbonate is a thermoplastic with three qualities that make it very attractive: its high impact resistance, heat resistance and its ability to become a translucent material. These qualities make it very versatile, its most striking use (at least for me) is suitcase, as the Tumi Policarbonate Degree, in architecture, its primary use is for light ceilings, domes or skylights, where the main drawback will be the condensation, suppressible with a good design, as usual.
