Sotheby’s will kick off its 2016 auction season on 20 January at Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery with the latest installment of the Boundless: Contemporary Art series, pioneered by Sotheby’s to unite art and design objects in one inspired platform. Offering more than 100 lots, this edition of Boundless will showcase modern and contemporary paintings, sculptures, street art and design furniture.

Arte 2
Fernando Botero, Horse 1992, Bronze with dark brown patina / Tsang Tsou Choi, Calligraphy on BearBearQee (two works) Circa 2004

Sotheby’s is also excited to present for the first time in Hong Kong a brand new section dedicated to artist’s jewels, featuring exquisite pieces by Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, Claude Lalanne and more. Isaure de Viel Castel, Head of Boundless Sales at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, said: ‘The establishment of Boundless: Contemporary Art has presented unlimited possibilities for both new and seasoned collectors to infuse art into their everyday life. This season, collectors will have the opportunity to acquire rare items including a Robert Indiana carpet in his iconic “LOVE” motif, a large-scale Keith Haring painting, as well as one-of-a-kind jewellery through the fresh addition of the “artist’s jewels” section, where collectors can appreciate and live with these wearable, miniature works of art.’

Arte 3
Rolf Sachs,  Lampion 2006, Borosilicate and argon gas lamp / Hubert Le Gall , Petit Robert 2014,  White gold leaf metal frame with mirror

Whether it is street art by the mysterious French urban artist Invader, one of Fernando Botero’s glossy rotund sculpture, or American graffiti artist Keith Haring’s iconic Pop figures, the latest edition of Boundless offers a truly varied selection of modern and contemporary art spanning diverse media, concepts and styles. Although celebrating the distinctiveness of each work, the sale also connects the dots between artists from East and West, as in the case of the sharp-edged abstractions by Hungarian-French Op artist Victor Vasarely and Chinese artist Hsiao Chin, or the poetic variations of Zao Wou-ki and T’ang Haywen – both China-born artists who developed their careers in the West. For signs of cross-cultural dialogue, look no further than the gestural compositions of American artist Sam Francis and Japanese practitioner Shozo Shimamoto. Also making appearances are such trailblazing figures including Yoshitomo Nara, Bernar Venet, KAWS and Hong Kong’s own King of Kowloon.

Arte 4
Kam Tin Bedside Table (two lots) 2015 Encased in pyrite cubes / Ron Arad,  Blo-Void 3, 2004 Mirror-polished aluminium alloy, anodized woven-aluminium mesh

Design furniture is at the heart of the Boundless sale. Ten distinctive pieces of furniture including chairs, carpets, tables, lamps and mirrors are presented together with works of art, creating a contemporary environment for collectors who enjoy living with great design objects. The rare appearance of carpets by masters of colour Robert Indiana and Zao Wou-ki, A Pair of Bedside Tables by Kam Tin, and Ron Arad’s amorphous aluminium chair Blo-Void 3 are all highlights of this exceptional event.
