Two days of wine sales at Sotheby’s New York on last September brought a total of $4,860,311 – at the high end of pre-sale expectations. The auctions were led by The Krug 1915 Tasting Experience which offered the opportunity to taste a 100 year old bottle of Krug 1915 in the maison’s cellars – along with an unprecedented 2-day program of tastings and tours in Reims, France.
The second single-owner sale from the Exceptional Cellar of James H. Clark realized $1,789,603, reaffirming the position of the collection as one of the greatest selections of Italian and Rhône wines ever offered by Sotheby’s, while an Important West Coast Collection fetched $1,699,688. The next wine auction in New York is the highly anticipated sale Château Margaux 1900 -2010 Direct from the Cellars, A Celebration of the Mentzelopoulos Era on October 17th.
On The Krug 1915 Tasting Experience, Jamie Ritchie, CEO of Sotheby’s Wine, Americas & Asia, commented: «The opportunity to drink a 100 year old bottle of Krug, that will never have left their cellars, drew bidders from four continents, demonstrating the extraordinary lengths Sotheby’s clients will go to pursue the world’s rarest wines and unique experiences.»
Connor Kriegel, Head of Wine Auction Sales at Sotheby’s commented: «Today’s $3 Million sale was the first of an exciting Fall season. There was tremendous interest in perfectly stored, mature wines from the world’s great producers. Bidders on the phone, the internet and in the room bid feverishly for First and Second Growths, Pétrus, DRC, Lafon, Coche-Dury, Screaming Eagle and Guigal.”
