Pregnancy is one of the most important moments in a woman’s life; it is a moment of changes where we have to look after our health more than ever, not forgetting and giving special attention to our oral health. During pregnancy it is very common to suffer from problems in our gums, enamel or caries. This is due to the hormones of the pregnancy. They modify the bacterial flora making them to be more likely to develop bacteria in the oral cavity.
The discomfort normally appears during the first trimester of the pregnancy, when so many women experiment gingivitis or inflamed gums produced by the plaque accumulated in our teeth, provoking gum irritation. Hormone changes or nausea are usually the main reason.
It is recommended to visit the specialist so they can study each case and advise us individually, because each woman can suffer from different symptoms. Keeping a good oral hygiene and maintain a healthy diet, will make these symptoms to be less damaging to our oral health. Brushing your teeth with a softer brush and the use of dental floss will help your gums to avoid redness so that, less inflammation. Eating food with calcium will empower bones and teeth same as the intake of proteins from meat, fish and vegetables.
We should also know that infections that the mother can suffer from, would not affect the fetus, as long as these infections are under the supervision and control of professionals. So that, it is very important for the mother to visit the dentist as soon as she realizes that she is pregnant, and keep comprehensive monitoring of the process and be able to enjoy a smile with no problems before, during and after your pregnancy.
