To mark 140 years as a timekeeping pioneer, New York-based Bulova has moved its headquarters into New York City’s most recognizable and celebrated building: the iconic Empire State Building. To officially celebrate the move, Bulova will host an opening event party for friends and partners. An honored attendee will be Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful football manager in history and former manager of Manchester United, for whom Bulova is official timekeeper.
«The new space is a perfect home for our expanding portfolio of watch brands, and signifies a new period of growth for the company,» said Bulova President Gregory Thumm. «Moving back into the center of the fashion capital of the world provides us with a renewed energy and creative spirit while honoring our company’s Manhattan origins.»
The design features a collaborative, open workspace for the company’s 29th floor headquarters, symbiotic with the company’s philosophy of innovation. Flooded with natural light, the space offers 360-degree Midtown panoramas, a shop-in-shop environment, and a reception area with displays set up as a rotating exhibit. Its hand-painted floor features the exposed-dial design of the original Bulova Accutron Spaceview.
This prestigious move brings Bulova back to its roots, as the company was originally located in lower Manhattan. Its founder Joseph Bulova opened his first store on Maiden Lane, which was the epicenter of New York City’sjewelry industry. Later, its 1920s location on 47th Street and 5th Avenue was outfitted with a rooftop observatory, the first facility of its kind.
One of the company’s first breakthroughs, it was used to measure sidereal time based on the earth’s rotation against fixed stars. In the 1940s, Bulova moved to a new location on 51st street and 5thAvenue before opening a new corporate center in Jackson Heights, Queens in the 1950s. The 1980s saw the company move to One Bulova Avenue in Woodside, Queens, and now three decades later, the company has come full circle back to Manhattan.
Founded in 1875, Bulova remains one of the world’s most recognized brands, reaching a wide range of consumers with its Bulova, Bulova Accu•Swiss, Bulova Accutron II, Caravelle New York, Wittnauer, and licensed Harley-Davidson® Timepieces by Bulova watches, Frank Lloyd Wright Collection® watches and clocks, and Bulova Clocks.
