With ‘Dirty Chic’, Hortensia Maeso seeks to reinterpret the classic white dress. For her first 2016 bridal collection she draws inspiration from the beauty of life and the patina of time on antique objects that have a story to tell. Her target customer is “a bride that turns her back on archetypes and conventionalism, eschews the pomp and circumstance, yet understands fashion”.
Her particular seal of “extravagant romanticism” translates into frayed lace and faded tulle in various degrees of white and grey that, through the manipulation of pleats and smooth swaths of fabric, create asymmetrical shapes: ancient-looking flowers, perforated linens and “sullied” and speckled cotton blends. The linings appear through sheer textiles or lace so as to “tarnish” the pieces, thereby creating a decadent pallet of distressed hues in off-white.
Hortensia Maeso, a regular at Magical Day by FIMI (an event that showcases kids’ formal wear for special occasions) is now gearing up to present her wedding gowns at the next edition of Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week. Her goal is to replicate the strategy she used with her line of communion dresses and children’s formal wear collections.
Since its launch in 2007, the brand has positioned itself in European countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands, plus she’s making inroads into the Mexican market. The company just launched an online store for their kids’ formal occasions line. After making their debut in Valencia, the brand is currently looking into opening franchises in Mexico and the United States.
